Week 12 - Videos/YouTube

  • love YouTube - one of the easiest applications for me to use
  • created an account and posted a comment at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-mIHk2rM0Q
  • use it to learn new pieces in my choir by:
  • find best version of a choir singing the piece we're practising in choir - for example here is link to one (ignore video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DNNdAROixI or this one with Oscar Peterson who needs a choir for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-mIHk2rM0Q download it and sing along with YouTube choir, music in hand
  • turn on the electric keyboard (situated right across from computer) and peck out the problem notes along with YouTube and sing at the same time - over and over and over again if necessary to 'get it'
  • above process guaranteed to clear a room in seconds
  • chose above videos first one for the audio (I don't look at video too depressing) and second one for audio and video because this is my favourite of his (Peterson) and we sing both
  • sent video to leader
  • what I dislike about YouTube: too much space taken up for comments - many are so ridiculous

Week 11 - Podcasts and audio files

  • have downloaded i-tunes - easy - listening to some jazz right now
  • subscribed to RSS and listened to a few minutes of the podcast from Sirsidynix Institute - would like something a little lighter next time please
  • having great deal of trouble with audio book from LibriVox and I really only wish to listen to one little poem by Frost or anyone really - I keep clicking on mp3 and ogg files and then it says they're downloading then it says "done" - so where the heck are they downloaded to?
  • going home to listen to audio book on cd - would like to figure this out soon though - it would certainly cut down on trips to library etc.
  • found audio book - great - LibriVox reader not as good as professional actors - on the other hand buying audio books is $$$$ and time needed to borrow discs from library

  • will use my flickr to post pictures and let faraway relatives see them
  • I can allow only some people to see them, right? hope so.

Week 10 Browser Tools

  • running a little behind just getting title in as a start
  • just installed "colourful tabs" - beautiful - I mean, how did I live without these, seriously I can see my tabs much better now
  • could live without message re malicious users and privacy violations though
  • am placing my trust, privacy etc. in RULA2.0 guides

Week 4 Flickr finally! Mouse Watch

Mouse Watch - tails abound of the critters moving up in the world (to the first floor I believe)

RULA 8 Google Applications continued

  • don't know if anyone else can see it but shared and asked for collaboration on document I made called Live music Toronto a list of two inexpensive/interesting music things to do this weekend
  • invited people to add their own too
  • chose 14 emails from work list to share with including leader
  • not sure how everyone knows I did this - do they get an email?
  • would work well in Library for collaborating AND getting word out on a project, event at the same time - while allowing for people to invite in and share more widely - very neat

Week 9 and counting Social Networks - Facebook

  • bit worried about new facebook account - was feeling paranoid and lied about my age, sex, year when I graduated from High School and my first name
  • could be in for public embarassment since I used my real surname which is kind of, well, unique
  • ???? - why when my profile is so incredibly wrong, when I searched for friends from that High School, did I get a result for a woman my age who graduated the year I did and who, well, I'm sorry to say it, used to have a really big mouth (in High School) - I guess she might have changed but from the looks of her picture it's not likely - is it possible that she could report all over the facebook world that Lies Weijs made a facebook account as a male named Rufus Weijs who graduated in the '90s instead of the '70's - hope not - would not ever attend High School reunion
  • went back to privacy setting - ticked that only my friends can see anything AND don't have any friends [yet] so will that do the trick?
  • next step: invite 2 sons to be my friend - fat chance!
  • declined by both kids - claim that they have nothing to hide but their friends do! right ok well to heck with them I have two new friends so thanks Kraigen and Denise - children think it's very hilarious that I only have 2 facebook friends - I told them it's all about quality

HELP !

I am livid - I published a post earlier today and now it's gone - did anyone see it - any witnesses whatsoever??? Did anyone take it???? THis is what happened - I went in just now to edit and when I pressed save/publish I got this error message bX-c1muu5 and it said search this error on group blah blah and I did getting 00 hits so then I went back to look at my blog and the entire entry for Week 8 Google Docs is gone - not there - oh I see a light coloured message saying "Draft autosaved at 4:39 PM" maybe it isn't gone let's see - but how do I check this - well I'll publish this post now and then look for the missing entry bye

Week 8 Google Applications and Mousewatch

  • have rescued week 8 entry - found in drafts - it wasn't easy
  • enjoyed week off RULA (am writing like ______ British woman Name? to save time)
  • now want Sony e-reader like RU President has - been uninterested 'til now
  • want to make clear (Donna) that I bowl much better in real life than I did on wii sport
  • made new igoogle page and saved it but now very afraid to make it my new homepage because won't I lose Ryerson and all stuff tabs etc. on my real or present homepage or will it merge sort of ? don't think I can handle more than one home page at present
  • doc sharing for the library - my group leader shared with me a fascinating colour coded spreadsheet of theses received and to be catalogued - I hope she doesn't want me to tick off how many (few) I've completed so far!?! - I'll be sharing something interesting with her soon
  • have shared a message with myself via email - next step share with leader
  • Kelly D. and I could have used doc-sharing app last week to compile RUn-amok team etc. rather than grappling with all of those emails OR would a wiki be better for that? don't have handle on differences between doc sharing and wiki quite yet

Mousewatch - not sure about anyone else down here on one but I'm starting to get laissez faire -letting stuff pile up on my desk etc. - risky behaviour

Mouse Watch Week 6 Librarything

This will be short - bad mood - forgot to save previous entry - now typing it over again. Here's link to my librarything http://www.librarything.com/catalog/LiesW which I loved very much except that I don't have time for it. When I get really really old and have more time I might come back to Librarything to explore - check out books that others with similar entries have been reading. No, next time I'm looking for a book I'll probably search around on Librarything IF I can remember my darn pw and name.

MOUSE watch - they're gone, all of them, I guess they were just 'passing through', sort of like the birds.

Still Week 5 del.ici.ous.

I'm still not liking it - is it because I'm rushing, too busy? Confession - of the 10 thingys you asked for, I copied 9 from others - is that allowed - I went to step 4 before step 3 - can I still win a prize? Only one of the bookmarks is my own (Nathanial Dett Chorale). BTW there are way too many steps in RULA2.0 this week. Also, although I thought I'd installed bookmarklets I don't seem to be using them, because every time I add a bookmark an annoying box appears telling me I could do this better using delicious bookmarks.

I'll admit I'm a little bothered by the lack of authority control - what else would you expect from a cataloguer? When I get time I'll check out University of Pennsylvania's Penntags but until then I'm of the opinion that using social bookmarking in libraries would not be a great idea - I can't see how things would not get 'out of control' but maybe that's my problem. Also, would I still have a job?

Week 5 of RULA d.el.ici.ou.s

My experience so far with delicious - YUK! First of all I don't use bookmarks in real books (I'm not proud of that but there it is) - so trying to use bookmarks and bookmarklets here has been horrifying - the creative craft video promised order from chaos - well I want my money back - at this point 40 minutes into the excercise I'd rather have a few .... you know what's on my desk - I do have a delicious account - I believe I also have installed (in spite of dire warnings that a malacious invasion would be risked) some kind of bookmarking tool of delicious's and some kind of tool of Mozilla's that works with delicious - BUT I HAVEN'T ACTUALLY GOT ANY WEBSITES BOOKMARKED in my delicious account and I understand I need to choose 10 that I think fellow library staff-mates should know about - never mind the technology, choosing those sites could be dicey ! At this point in the process I don't feel liberated or empowered - but I'm not giving up yet - I will consult with my leader this afternoon.

Mouse Watch 7 or 8,
This one will be quick - I'm on the Ref Desk for heaven's sake.
The Toronto Star has discovered where our little friends have gone - the Loblaws at Dupont and Christie - all of them, every single one - the food is much better there AND there's more of it - how they got there is anyone's guess.
Which reminds me have you ever seen that book Subway Mouse by the Canadian woman plastecine artist/writer?
bye for now

on WIKIs and Mouse watch too

I 'm dizzy - the RULA learning curve may be too steep for me. How the heck does one edit the name of a new page on the WIKI - I don't want to sound paranoid but I think there are people behind the scenes there that have much more power over this thing - if they're listening could they change my "Pasta e fagioli (soup - vegetarian option)" to "Pasta e fagioli (soup in 20 minutes)" - I think the latter is catchier - alternatively maybe someone can tell me how to edit it myself - maybe I'll contact my group leader - well okay I'll figure it out myself.

I could see using a wiki for committee work within the library - especially for planning teas, parties etc. I wonder if a Wiki for the reference desk would provide continuity, pass along info throughout each day by having us post FAQs and other issues that come up for the day etc.? (do you put .? or just the . in this case?)

Mouse - things are eerily quiet down here on the first floor - I think they have migrated elsewhere. The daily cleaning off of my desk has added substantially to my workload.

Blogline and Mouse Watch

Okay I've done my homework I think, I hope. What I don't like about RSS - there's not enough time, too many choices ... the top 200!!! ... I find it overwhelming ... I do well with lists of 10.

Seriously, now that I have a blogline set up, as I come across other RSSes, RSSs, RSSi (?) feeds that are of personal interest (choirs) and work related (ERM) I will add them but I'm kind of worried that it will end up being another growing list of things that are kine of rebuking me because I don't find the time to look at them. I don't read news, weather etc. online and I really don't want to start to - I love radio and magazines so - I mean if I want to know what it's like outside, I throw the door open and look, feel ... it drives my loved ones crazy ... why is that ... I know it is handy to find out what the weather is like elsewhere - for travel purposes, I get that ... but the weather here, right now??

... AS FOR THE MOUSE ... there's been a blackout on that story - I don't know if the news has leaked out to other areas but there has been at least one casualty on the first floor, and it wasn't the glue trap thank goodness, it was the other one, you know, the mouse trap, trap ... I have spoken to an "expert" in the field who suggested that "cleaning up" may in fact prevent more captures since these critters are smart, they'll just go elsewhere in the library ... so watch out everyone else, the first floor is now spotless ...

Mouse Watch Day 5.2

One of my blog 'followers' and her side kick helped me figure out how to get my clock on to Toronto time - but sorry for the life of me I can't remember what I clicked - not dashboard or many other things - but it might have been layout or formatting.

Mouse Watch Day 5

The minute I saw the mouse excrement ON MY DESK (I refuse to call them droppings - never, never will I do that) this whole mouse watch thing took a different turn - I'm not sure which turn yet though. It might not be funny and it could mean war so ...

I know why the mouse suddenly decided after so many days on OTHER PEOPLE'S DESKS to visit mine - I mean the management should know really that no one around me was working here yesterday on the first floor - THEY WERE VACUUMING, BLEACHING, DUSTING, TREATING, CONTAINERING you name it.

I on the other hand performed a cursory vacuuum and dust, a touch of containering and look what happens?

ON THE PLUS SIDE - 2 followers and more comments - it kind of disturbs me that there's a "Manage" thingy beside the followers - managing is not my forte.

Mouse watch Day 4

Well it's been a dark day all around (except for the mice). Here on the first floor I feel this tremendous pressure to vacuuum (that may be spelled wrong and I don't care). I thought I would be escaping housework when I came here! The thought of all the mice coming to MY area now that the surrounding environs are so pristine may just be the tipping point for me - I've started by having the vacuuum set up by my desk - now I'm going for a break and think about plugging it in when I return.

Mouse watch Day Two

Still no mouse - I'm telling you this critter is vegetarian, possibly even macrobiotic, or vegan or maybe it's on a raw food only diet - either way can it have peanut butter? I've brought in organic almond butter from home - what do you think? What's the etiquette here - do I need permission to mess around with someone else's mouse trap - what are the boundaries in the office for this kind of issue??? Her trap is only milimeters away from my cubicle so I think I may have some rights or at least a right of way here.

Mouse watch

Mouse watch: my sources say peanut butter is THE best thing to put in a trap. I mean, come on - a piece of salami??? - any fairly well educated rodent could just slip that out in a jiffy and be back for more tomorrow.
